Everything you need to get started: form, odds, bet types and how to follow the action.
Quick Links
Getting into horse racing is easier when you have a few basics under your belt. This guide covers the essentials: how to read form, understand odds, and the main bet types so you can follow the action and place informed bets.
Form is the record of each horse's recent runs. It is usually shown as a line of numbers (e.g. 1x234), where each number is the finishing position and "x" might mean a spell or non-finish. The rightmost figure is the most recent run. By reading form you can see if a horse is in form, improving, or struggling. Combine that with weight, barrier draw, jockey, and trainer to compare runners. Our free form guide and How to Read a Form Guide page explain symbols and how to use form when betting.
Odds tell you the potential return for a bet. In Australia we use decimal odds: the number is your total return for a $1 stake. So $4.00 means you get $4 back (including your $1 stake) if the horse wins. Fixed odds are set by the bookmaker and do not change once you bet; tote odds (e.g. TAB) depend on the pool and are finalised at jump time. Comparing odds across bookmakers can improve your returns—our Odds Comparison page shows the best price for each runner.
The main bet types are win (horse wins), place (horse runs in the placings), and exotics like exacta (first two in order), trifecta (first three), and quaddie (winners of four races). Start with simple win and place bets while you learn form and odds; then explore exotics using our betting guides.
