Immortal champion

Makybe Diva

Trained by Lee Freedman

Makybe Diva is the only horse in history to win three Melbourne Cups: 2003, 2004 and 2005, the last of them in front of a roaring Flemington crowd as a seven-year-old mare.

Trained by Lee Freedman and ridden in all three Cups by Glen Boss, the British-bred stayer carried the hopes of a nation — and delivered every time. Her 2005 win made her the highest-earning horse in Australian history at that point, and her name remains shorthand for staying greatness.

Makybe Diva FAQs

How many Melbourne Cups did Makybe Diva win?

Three — 2003, 2004 and 2005 — the only horse ever to achieve the feat. She was ridden by Glen Boss and trained by Lee Freedman.

Is Makybe Diva the greatest stayer in Australian history?

Most judges say yes: three Cups, an unmatched record at Flemington over 3200m, and a career earnings record that stood for years. Carbine, Phar Lap and Winx are the other names in that conversation.
