The 2400-metre Caulfield Cup start sits just near the home turn, giving the field only a short run before the first bend, and the track's notorious 'Caulfield rise' can find out horses with questionable stamina. Inside gates are a big advantage in sprint and mile races, and the venue also stages the iconic Caulfield Guineas and Blue Diamond Stakes in autumn.

The Caulfield Cup is run over 2400 metres, the same distance as the Sydney Cup and 800 metres shorter than the Melbourne Cup's 3200 metres.
