About Morphettville

Morphettville, headquarters of the South Australian Jockey Club, is one of Australia's oldest continuously operating racecourses. The spacious 2307-metre circuit in Adelaide's south-west hosts the state's richest races, including the Goodwood and South Australian Derby during the Adelaide carnival in May.

The track's size makes it genuinely fair, though the 309-metre straight is modest, and the famous Morphettville chute for 1000–1200-metre races starts right at the home turn. Racing SA's headquarters sit trackside, and the course remains the heart of South Australian racing.

Morphettville FAQs

When is the Adelaide carnival at Morphettville?β€Ί

The Adelaide autumn carnival runs through late April and May at Morphettville, headlined by the Goodwood over 1200 metres and the South Australian Derby on the same card.

Is Morphettville a fair track?β€Ί

Yes β€” the 2307-metre circumference is one of the largest in Australia, so horses get a genuine run and results are rarely decided by barrier or bias. Fitness and class tend to tell.

What direction does Morphettville race?β€Ί

Morphettville races anti-clockwise, consistent with Victorian and most other southern state tracks.
