How Caulfield results become official
After each race the judge confirms the finishing order and the stewards check for interference. If a protest is lodged, it is heard before the result is confirmed. Only then do official placings, margins and dividends appear on Racing.com and the Melbourne Racing Club website. A result shared in the first minute after a close finish may not be the final one.
Reading margins and dividends
In results, 'nse' is a nose, 'hd' a head and 'nk' a neck; numbers before 'L' are lengths. Dividends are declared per $1 unit once pools close: win, place, quinella (first two in any order), exacta (first two in order), trifecta (first three in order) and first four.
The Caulfield track
Caulfield is an anti-clockwise, triangular track of about 2.08 km with a 367m home straight and banked turns. It is the Melbourne Racing Club's home course, about nine kilometres south-east of the Melbourne CBD, and has hosted racing since 1859 and the Caulfield Cup since 1879.
