Dividend FAQ
How are horse racing dividends calculated?
Tote (parimutuel) dividends are calculated by dividing the total pool (minus the TAB takeout percentage) by the number of winning units. Fixed odds dividends are set by the bookmaker at the time you place your bet.
What is the TAB takeout rate?
TAB takeout varies by bet type. Win bets typically have a 14-16% takeout, Place bets around 14-15%, and exotic bets like Trifectas can have a 20-25% takeout. The remainder is distributed to winning ticket holders.
How does a flexi dividend work?
If you place a flexi bet at less than 100%, your dividend is proportionally reduced. For example, a 50% flexi on a $120 Trifecta dividend pays $60. This lets you cover more combinations at a lower total cost.
What is the minimum dividend?
In Australia, the minimum tote dividend is typically $1.04 for Win and Place bets, meaning you receive at least 4 cents profit per $1 bet. Some exotics have a minimum of $1.00.

Tote (parimutuel) betting pools in Australia are managed by the TAB, which deducts a percentage (takeout) before distributing the remaining pool to winning ticket holders. Different bet types have different takeout rates โ Win bets typically have the lowest (around 14-16%), while exotic bets like First Fours can have takeouts of 22-25%.
Flexi betting, available for exotic bet types, allows you to take a percentage of a full unit bet. A 50% flexi means you pay half the cost but receive half the dividend. This is particularly useful for large combination bets where a full unit would be expensive. Our calculator handles flexi calculations automatically.
