Exacta Betting Explained
The exacta β first and second in the correct order β is the purest exotic bet. It costs little, pays multiples more than a quinella, and rewards punters who genuinely know the two best horses in a race.
01How an exacta works
An exacta requires you to pick the winner and the runner-up in the correct finishing order. A $1 exacta on horses 4 and 7 pays only if 4 wins and 7 runs second. Because order matters, exactas pay significantly more than quinellas β the same combination that returns $6 on the quinella might pay $12 or more on the exacta, depending on the pool.
02Boxed exactas
Boxing covers both orders: a boxed exacta on 4 and 7 wins if either 4-7 or 7-4 fills the first two. The trade-off is cost β a $1 boxed exacta is two $1 combinations, so $2 total. Boxing three horses costs $6, four horses $12. Box when you're confident about the two best horses but unsure of the order, which is most of the time.
03Standout and standout-roving exactas
A standout exacta banks on one horse to win: standout 4 with 7, 9 and 12 covers 4-7, 4-9 and 4-12 for $3. If your standout wins, you collect whichever combination lands. The reverse (roving banker second) suits races where a dominant favourite should win but the placegetters are open β take the favourite for first with your three place chances for second.
04Exacta strategy
Exactas are at their best in races with a clear top-two and doubtful rest β a dominant favourite plus one obvious danger. In chaotic country races, the pool is small and the dividend volatile; in metro races, the market is efficient and value is thinner. Look for races where your assessment of the second horse differs from the market's, because that's where exacta dividends overpay.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between an exacta and a quinella?βΊ
An exacta needs the first two in the correct order; a quinella pays if they finish first and second in either order. Exactas pay more because they're harder to land.
How much does a boxed exacta cost?βΊ
A boxed exacta costs $1 per combination. Boxing two horses costs $2, three horses $6, four horses $12, five horses $20.
Are exacta dividends fixed at bet time?βΊ
No β exactas are parimutuel (TAB tote) products, so the dividend depends on the final pool and how much was bet on each combination. Bookmakers offering fixed exactas are rare in Australia.
