Understanding Racing Odds
Odds are simply the market's opinion of a horse's chance, converted into a price. Understand how they're framed and how they move, and you'll understand when the crowd is wrong β that's where value lives.
01Decimal odds and implied probability
Australia uses decimal odds. The number is your total return per dollar staked: $10 at 3.50 returns $35 ($25 profit plus your stake). To convert odds to implied probability, divide 1 by the odds: 3.50 implies a 28.6% chance. When your assessed chance is higher than the implied probability, you have a value bet.
02How bookmakers frame a market
Add up the implied probabilities of every runner and you'll get more than 100% β typically 110β125%. That overround is the bookmaker's margin. Smaller margins mean fairer prices, which is why comparing bookmakers matters: the same horse can be 3.20 with one and 3.60 with another, and over hundreds of bets that difference is enormous.
03Reading odds movements
A horse 'eased' from 5.00 to 3.50 is being backed β sometimes by informed money following stable confidence. Conversely, a drifter from 3.50 to 5.00 suggests the smarties are elsewhere. Market moves are information, not instructions: follow them when you have no strong opinion of your own, but trust your own form analysis when you do.
04Fluctuations and the tote
The TAB tote price is decided by public money and moves until the jump, while bookmakers offer fixed odds at the time of bet. Fixed odds lock in your price; tote odds can pay more or less. Many punters take fixed odds for value when they believe a horse will firm, and compare both before betting.
