Track Conditions Explained

'Good 4', 'Soft 6', 'Heavy 10' — the track rating shapes the day's results as much as any horse. Here's what the numbers mean and how to use them in your betting.

01The Australian track rating scale

Australia rates tracks from Firm 1 to Heavy 10, with Good 4 the benchmark. Firm 1–2 is hard and lightning-fast, rarely seen outside summer. Good 3–4 is the ideal racing surface. Soft 5–7 indicates rain-affected ground with give in it. Heavy 8–10 is genuinely wet — energy-sapping going that sorts out the genuine wet-trackers from the pretenders.

02How rain changes a meeting

Track condition is measured at set times but rain during a meeting can shift it several points in an hour. A 'Good 4' at race 1 can be a 'Soft 6' by race 7, and horses who skipped across the firm ground early may struggle late. Always check the latest condition before betting the last races — and watch for downgrades announced by stewards.

03Which horses handle wet ground

Form guides show wet-track performances with indicators like '(wet)' or a 'w' beside placings. Horses with action that gets low to the ground — 'mudlarks' — relish heavy ground, while big, long-striding types can struggle. Breeding matters too: European bloodlines often handle soft ground better than pure Australian speed pedigrees.

04Inside vs outside lanes in the wet

On rain-affected tracks, the inside can become chopped up ('a bog inside') or, conversely, the fastest ground if the rail has been moved. Jockeys will tell you within two races where the good ground is — watch the first races closely and adjust; on wet days the bias often matters more than the form.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Good 4 track rating mean?›

Good 4 is the benchmark Australian racing surface — firm enough for fast times, with enough give to be safe. Ratings run from Firm 1 (hardest) to Heavy 10 (wettest).

Do some horses only run well on wet tracks?›

Yes — specialist wet-trackers (nicknamed 'mudlarks') often have form that reads poorly on dry ground but excellent on soft or heavy ratings. Check wet-track indicators in the form guide.
