Multi Betting (All-Up) Guide
A multi (all-up, accumulator, parlay) rolls one bet into the next: all legs must win for the ticket to pay. It's the bet behind most big collect stories β and most losing tickets. Here's how to use it properly.
01How a multi works
Each leg's odds multiply: two $2 winners combine into a $4 multi, add a third $2 winner and it's $8. Every leg must win β one loser kills the ticket. Because the odds compound, multis can turn small stakes into large returns, which is exactly why they're so popular with casual punters and so carefully priced by bookmakers.
02Race multis versus same-race multis
A traditional race multi combines winners (or placegetters) across different races β the classic 'Saturday all-up'. A same-race multi combines outcomes within one race: a horse to win plus the quinella, or the first four. Same-race multis are priced by the bookmaker's algorithms rather than multiplied market odds, and the margin is high β treat them as fun, not strategy.
03The honest mathematics
Every leg you add compounds the bookmaker's margin as well as the odds. Three legs at a 5% margin each effectively carry a ~14% total margin against you. That doesn't mean never multis β it means keep them short. Two to three legs is the rational ceiling; a seven-leg 'lotto ticket' is exactly that.
04Building a smarter multi
Anchor with a genuine banker β a dominant favourite you genuinely rate, not just the shortest price β then add one or two selections where you have an edge: a track specialist, a first-up improver, a jockey-trainer combo in form. Consider place multis for a higher strike rate, and stake small: multis are high-variance entertainment, not an investment strategy.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are multi odds calculated?βΊ
The odds multiply across legs: $2 Γ $2 Γ $3 = $12 total odds. All legs must win; if any leg loses, the whole multi loses.
What happens if a leg is scratched?βΊ
Most Australian bookmakers remove the scratched leg and reprice the multi without it. If it was your only leg (single), the stake is refunded.
Are multis worth it?βΊ
Short multis (2β3 legs) with selections you genuinely rate can be. Long multis carry compounded bookmaker margins and should be treated as low-stake fun.
