02When was the first Caulfield Cup?
The first Caulfield Cup was run in 1879, three years after the Victoria Amateur Turf Club was formed in 1876. It was run over 1½ miles until metric distances arrived in 1972 and has been 2400 metres since. It was classed as a Principal Race until 1979, when it became a Group 1. During World War II the Cup moved to Flemington, and in 1943 it was run in divisions, which is why 2026 is the 150th running rather than the 148th year.
