02A short history of Caulfield

Racing at Caulfield started in 1859 on a bush track where the Melbourne Hunt Club met; a racecourse was later laid out on the site of the club's dog kennels. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club was established in 1876 and ran the first Caulfield Cup in 1879. The course was rebuilt after the 1995 Caulfield Cup and reopened in April 1996, when the track was widened to 30 metres and the straight lengthened by 43 metres. It was relaid again in 2005. Racing Victoria says the track will be fully resurfaced after the 2026 Caulfield Cup, with feature meetings on 14 and 28 November 2026 moved to Sandown.

Accessible car parks are opposite the main entrance on Station Street, with lift access to the grandstands. On big race days, public transport is the easiest option.
